Easy Homemade Waffles
I love the combination of different temperatures in my desserts, like hot waffles topped with cold whipped cream (or even better, ice cream!) These homemade waffles are so quick and easy to put together, you’ll have a delicious treat in no time.

I thought waffle makers were expensive. Mine is from Asda, and it genuinely shocked me that it cost the same as one order of waffles from a dessert shop. So, when weighing up my options (buying waffles vs buying a waffle maker for endless homemade waffles), the choice was clear!
Waffle Toppings
There are loads of toppings to choose from when it comes to waffles. You have the classic salted butter and sweet maple syrup. Or, add half a tsp of cinnamon powder to your dry ingredients, then top your sweetly spiced waffles with caramelised bananas.
My favourite, however, is a classic vanilla waffle topped with melted chocolate spread, sliced strawberries, blueberries, ice cream, and whipping cream. What are your favourite waffle toppings?
Cornflour
When it comes to creating the perfect homemade waffles, one ingredient makes all the difference: cornflour, also known as cornstarch. Adding cornflour to your homemade waffle batter is the secret to achieving the perfect balance of crispiness and fluffiness, ensuring that your waffles are not only delicious, but also have that irresistible texture that keeps you coming back for more.
Easy Homemade Waffles
Ingredients
- 20 g sugar
- 180 ml milk
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)
- 60 g melted butter
- 150 g plain flour
- 40 g cornflour
- 1½ tsp baking powder
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- Melt your butter.
- Add your milk, sugar, egg, and vanilla bean paste to a mixing bowl and mix thoroughly.
- Once the ingredients are fully combined, slowly pour in the cooled melted butter while whisking.
- Add flour, cornflour, baking powder, and salt to the mixture. Whisk until the batter is smooth and thick.
- Preheat your waffle maker. Pour about 3/4 cup of batter in. For this step, follow the manufacturer's baking instructions for your specific waffle maker.
- Bake the waffles for approximately 3 minutes, until they turn a beautiful golden colour.
- Remove the waffles from the waffle maker, and place on a cooling rack (or directly onto a plate if serving immediately).
- Add your favorite toppings, and enjoy!
Notes
- When baking your waffles, it’s normal to see a lot of steam coming from the waffle maker. If the steam lessens, it’s typically a sign that the waffles are ready.
- If your waffle maker has a non-stick coating, use a wooden or silicone utensil to remove the waffles, to avoid scratching the non-stick coating off.
How To Store Leftover Homemade Waffles?
First, allow your waffles to cool completely on a cooling rack, so they don’t go soggy at the bottom. Once completely cooled, stack the homemade waffles with parchment paper between them, to prevent sticking. Then, place your stack of waffles into a ziplock bag.
What you do next depends on when you plan to enjoy your homemade waffles. If you intend to eat them within a few days, store them in the fridge. Alternatively, if you’re saving them for a later date, freezing is the best option. Place the ziplock bag of waffles in the freezer, where they can be stored for up to three months.
When you’re ready to enjoy waffles, simply reheat them in the toaster or oven!
I doubled the recipe and it worked out great. I’ll definitely be making these again, thanks.
